Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer nicknamed “The Golden city”, is a city in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Situated close to the Pakistan Border, Jaisalmer is a major tourist spot located in the northwestern state of Rajasthan in India. Jaisalmer still retains its medieval charm, which is evident in its colorful narrow streets, splendid forts and palaces of Rajasthan, opulent havelis and bazaars. Jaisalmer stands mighty and proud and welcome tourist from all over the world to get accustomed to her magical world of color, Jaisalmer has become one of the most visited destinations of India, especially for tourists who are coming all the way from foreign lands. The History of Jaisalmer has a charm of its own. Like all other cities of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer too has its own glorious past to boast about. History of Jaisalmer draws heavily from the history of the Rajputana. In Jaisalmer, one can hear the tunes of the historical Rajasthani folk music which are basically ballads, called as “Rasos”, praising the kings for their gallant deeds.

Major Attractions

Jaisalmer Fort:-Rising like a sunbeam from the golden sands of the desert, Jaisalmer Fort is the second oldest fort of Rajasthan.

Havelis:- Evoking a vision of chivalry and valor, these havelis were built by wealthy merchants. The famous havelis of Jaisalmer are: Salim Singh ki Haveli, Patwon ki Haveli, Nathmal ki Haveli.

Gadissar Lake:- The origin of this artificial water tank dates back to 1156 AD. Surrounded by small temples and shrines, it also gives a view of the exquisite archway, Teelon ki Pol – one of the main entrances to the lake and the city.

Vyas Chhatri:- Also known as the city of Sunset Point, it houses the cenotaph of Sage Vyas who compiled the famous epic Mahabharata. 

Best Time to Visit

Winter (October to February) is pleasant with a mild and cool atmosphere. Temperature levels during winters range between 10°C to 24°C. This is the perfect time to enjoy Jaisalmer tourism at its best.

Summer (March to June) are severely hot and humid with temperature levels ranging between 36°C and 42°C making it impossible to enjoy outdoor activities. Sunstroke is also a very common occurrence.

Monsoon (July to September) offer low to medium rainfalls in Jaisalmer. Though the temperature settles down to a more comfortable level, excessive humidity makes it difficult to travel outdoors.

How to Reach

By Air:- Jaisalmer is not directly connected by air with any part of India. Jodhpur Airport, located some 300 km away from Jaisalmer, is the nearest airport to the desert land.

By Road:- Jaisalmer serves rest of India by well maintained network of roadways. Deluxe and ordinary buses of Rajasthan Roadways as well as many private operates connects Jaisalmer with Jodhpur, Jaipur, Bikaner, Barmer, Mount Abu, Ahemdabad etc.

By Train:- Jaisalmer is served by both broad gauge and metre gauge railway tracks. Direct trains from Delhi, Jaipur and Jodhpur can be availed to reach Jaisalmer.
